Andøya Spaceport as the first operating launch
site for small launch vehicles in Europe provides the technical infrastructure, the launch pads and the buildings. Isar Aerospace will conduct the first test flight from Andøya Spaceport, with their launch vehicle Spectrum.
The Safety Director for Andøya Spaceport is head of the safety department and accountable for Occupational health safety management across all departments and activities at the Spaceport.
The candidates must be eligible to obtain a Norwegian security clearance.


Working tasks/responsibilities

  • Prepare for and maintain safe operations through implementing safety strategies, continuous safety promotion and monitoring and mitigations of safety risks (safety management system).
  • Improving and managing our Safety Management System.
  • Line manager for flight- and ground safety managers, as well as operational safety personnel.
  • Develop safety plans, policies and strategies, including management, flight and ground safety.
  • Ensure the development of mission safety culture in cooperation with launch operators.
  • Contribute to the evolution of operational safety processes, procedures and training curriculum necessary for operating orbital launch vehicles from Andøya.
  • Continue the work of obtaining and maintaining licenses from the Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB) for storage and handling of hazardous materials (Storulykkeforskriften) as well as launch site operator license (LSO) from the Civil Aviation Authority Norway (CAA-N).
  • Developing and maintaining a sound safety culture within the spaceport, and encouraging our partners and customers to comply with our standards.

Qualifications - education

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field, e.g. aerospace engineering, risk management, technical safety, fire protection and/or hazardous materials, occupational health and safety, licencing, etc. Experience may compensate for educational requirements
  • Proven experience in team and systematic safety management
  • Experience from or work with public administration, e.g. an authority or a license application process is preferred
  • Proven skills in analysis and report writing are beneficial 
  • Experience from process industry such as chemical or petrochemical industry would be preferred.
  • Experience from operational environments, e.g. launch ranges, aviation, oil and gas industry or mechanical industry is beneficial
  • Experience in space engineering, launcher or ground systems technology and operations would be an asset
  • Experience with managing chemical registers
  • Fluent in written and oral Norwegian and English 

Personal qualities

  • Good management skills of complex and structural processes and with good track record in reporting and on time management
  • Structured and the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • A good advocate for safety and passionate about creating a sound safety culture
  • Co-operative and willing to assist on a wide topic of tasks
  • Enthusiastic about working in a new space-environment and supporting of the development of Andøya Spaceport
  • Good knowledge of regulatory requirements
