Core Facility for High-Throughput Screening and Chemical Biology

A one-year full time position is available from 1st. April 2024 in the Cora facility for High-Throughput Screening and Chemical Biology at the University of Oslo. The facility is part of the Centre for Molecular Medicine Norway and has a tight connection to the Dept. of Core Facilities at Oslo University Hospital (OUS, Radiumhospitalet). NCMM is a research centre for translational medicine, molecular biology, biotechnology and bioinformatics within the Medical Faculty of the University of Oslo (UiO), devoted to research and postgraduate training in addition to operating a number of technology platforms.

The facility offers high throughput screening services using small molecular chemical compounds in biological systems. The platform is equipped with state-of-the-art liquid handling technology and detection platforms, and together with a comprehensive chemical compound library (~70000 chemical compounds) it offers a unique portfolio of highly specialized services within the field of chemical biology. The Chemical Biology Platform is operated as a service-based core facility and is serving both academic research groups as well as small and medium-sized enterprises. It is part of the national infrastructure NOR-OPENSCREEN (http://www.openscreen.no/) which is a partner site in the European research infrastructure EU-OPENSCREEN.


NCMM is now seeking candidates for the position of:  Chemical Biology and Robotics Engineer

We are seeking for:

Highly motivated individuals with an excellent track record, that can work both independently and as part of a team are welcome to apply. This is a unique opportunity for a person with the right mind set to develop in a scientific and dynamic environment, and the right candidate will have the opportunity to be involved in large chemical biology and high-throughput screening projects from project outline to data analysis.


Tasks include:

  • Maintain, programme and run advanced automated robotic systems for liquid handling.
  • Carry out daily operations and provide technical support for automation equipment.
  • Participate in transfer of bench top assays to automated, robot controlled high throughput screening formats.
  • Participate in planning and performing of large-scale chemical biology screens.
  • Participate in compound- and data management using dedicated software packages.
  • Analyse data sets from screening campaigns comprising several thousand data points.
  • Participate in the development and application of new data analysis tools and strategies.
  • Interaction with users during the entire project from initial planning to experimental phase and discussion of results.

Depending on background and experience of the candidate other working tasks could also be considered.


Qualification:

  • Minimally, a Bachelor degree in biotechnology or a related area (engineering, chemistry, biochemistry or biology) is needed, but higher education in a relevant field would be preferred. Experience from similar work can replace this formal requirement.
  • Experience with biochemical assays and methodologies is required.
  • Work experience with chemical biology and high throughput screening is preferred.
  • Experience with cell culture will be of advantage.
  • Experience in lab automation, lab robotics and automated liquid handling will be of advantage (e.g., Biomek pipetting robots, Echo acoustic liquid handler, Access Workstation …).
  • Experience in managing small molecular compound libraries is of advantage.
  • Experience with analysis of screening data is preferred.
  • A reliable, well organized candidate that has the flexibility needed for working in a service-oriented context will be preferred.
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English are required. Basic knowledge in Norwegian, both written and oral, is preferred.

We offer

  • Salary NOK 509 300 - 667 700  per annum depending on qualifications in a position as Principal Engineer, position code 1085 or Head Engineer, position code 1087.
