Working alongside colleagues from more than 35 countries, you will be part of an internationally diverse and highly collaborative team dedicated to building a safer and more sustainable world.

The Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) is looking for 4-6 talented and motivated professionals with a PhD in geotechnical engineering to join our interdisciplinary teams working from our various office locations in Norway. We are hiring across our divisions:
  • Natural Hazards
  • Offshore Energy
  • Geotechnics and Environment
  • Geodata and Technology

This is an opportunity to apply and further develop your geotechnical expertise in work that helps society build, live, and travel on safe ground.
Key Qualifications
  • You hold a PhD in geotechnical engineering and have approximately 2-4 years of relevant professional experience, preferably from applied research, consulting, project-based, or commercially oriented environments.
  • You communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, and can tailor your communication style to different audiences and stakeholders.
  • You thrive in collaborative environments, enjoy sharing knowledge, and contribute positively to interdisciplinary teams working towards common goals.
  • You combine strong analytical skills with intellectual curiosity, and sound engineering judgment. You enjoy tackling complex geotechnical challenges and can evaluate problems and solutions from multiple technical and practical perspectives.
Preferred Attributes
  • You are motivated by NGI's societal mission and the opportunity to contribute to safer communities, resilient infrastructure, and sustainable development.
  • You build strong working relationships and thrive in a collaborative, supportive, and interdisciplinary environment.
  • You are curious, proactive and motivated to develop your expertise in an organisation where research, consulting and innovation go hand in hand.

In addition, we organise seasonal cabin and ski trips and provide access to company cabins available for employees to rent.

On the different divisions at NGI
Natural Hazards

The Natural Hazards division combines expertise in geotechnics, geoscience, risk assessment, and digital technologies to assess and reduce natural hazard risk. We develop solutions for municipalities, infrastructure owners, industry, and public authorities related to geohazards and climate-induced hazards.

Our work spans both research and consulting, integrating data analytics, remote sensing, AI, and digital tools for hazard assessment and decision support. We also work internationally within hydropower dam safety, tailings storage facilities, and infrastructure safety.

We are looking for someone who:
  • Has a strong interest in natural hazard risk, slope stability, and geotechnical challenges such as landslides, flood risk, tailings dams, and infrastructure safety.
  • Has experience with, or interest in, programming, geospatial analysis, data science, AI, or machine learning.
  • Is motivated to contribute to both consulting projects and research activities.
  • Has experience with, or a strong interest in, developing research proposals and securing external funding, including participation in EU-funded and other competitive research projects.
Offshore Energy

The Offshore Energy division provides geotechnical expertise for offshore energy and infrastructure projects worldwide, including offshore wind, oil and gas, carbon storage, and subsea developments. We combine research and engineering to address challenges related to site characterization, foundation design, geohazards, and soil-structure interaction in marine environments.

We are looking for someone who:
  • Has experience in offshore geotechnics or marine infrastructure.
  • Has experience with applied research, consulting, or advanced numerical modelling.
  • Has experience with, or a strong interest in, developing research proposals and participating in international research projects.
Geotechnics and Environment

The Geotechnics and Environment division provides geotechnical expertise for infrastructure, construction, and environmental projects in Norway and internationally. Our work includes site investigations, numerical analyses, foundation design, and geotechnical engineering for complex ground conditions, as well as projects related to contaminated soil and environmental geotechnics. We combine engineering expertise with digital tools, 3D modelling, and interdisciplinary collaboration to deliver safe, efficient, and sustainable solutions.

We are looking for someone who:
  • Has consulting experience in geotechnical engineering, infrastructure, construction, or environmental projects.
  • Has practical geotechnical experience and an interest in applying digital tools, programming, AI, or machine learning in engineering practice.
  • Enjoys working in multidisciplinary teams and collaborating across technical disciplines.
  • Has experience with, or an interest in, mining and mining-related geotechnical challenges.
  • Has experience with, or a strong interest in, research and innovation activities, including proposal development, externally funded projects, and collaboration with industry.
  • Is costumer-oriented, understands client needs and is motivated by creating value for costumers.
Geodata and Technology

The Geodata and Technology division provides expertise in experimental geotechnics, geodata acquisition, laboratory testing, monitoring and instrumentation, and technology development within the geo domain. We support projects in climate, environment, energy, and societal safety through consulting, field investigations, laboratory analyses, software development, and applied research, delivered both onshore and offshore. Our work combines advanced technologies, geospatial data, and digital solutions to improve ground investigations, monitoring, and decision-making.

We are looking for someone who:
  • Has experience as a geotechnical engineer, with an interest in or experience from field investigations, laboratory testing, instrumentation, or monitoring systems.
  • Is a geotechnical engineer with experience from field and/or model testing, or a strong interest in experimental geotechnics.
  • Has experience with, or an interest in, software development, geospatial data, digital solutions, AI, or data analytics applied to geotechnical engineering.
  • Is interested in the development of in situ characterization equipment and methods for geotechnical investigations.
